Chapter Nine

Boone would have liked to have saddled up ridden after Eric, but Callie was barely able to get around. She had grown stronger, and the burn had begun to heal, which relieved much of the constant pain. But she still needed another day or two. His decision to wait paid dividends that very evening.

A little before dusk, he spotted two riders coming towards the wells, but these two were approaching from the north and he recognized them both. Race and Ether had made good time from Deming.

Race was pale from the long ride, but he managed to get down off of his horse under his own power. He looked at Boone, then at the girl, then back at Boone.

'Who's the pan-fried boy in the baggy britches?' Race teased. 'You fish him out of a fire and cover him in mud to heal from the burns?'

'The young lady is Callie Moray,' Boone said with some force, 'from the stage. She was left to die in the sun, but beat the odds and is getting better each day.'

Race swept his hat from his head and did a slight bow. 'My apologies, Miss Moray,' he said. 'I was poking fun at Cousin Boone, and sure wasn't intending to insult you.'

'You were with my boy?' Ether asked quickly, before she could respond to Race.

'Yes,' she answered him. 'He was still with them when I escaped. They were taking him to Amoroca.'

'How was he holding up? Ether continued his questions. 'Did he see Jason killed?'

'He is a brave little boy … and, yes, we both witnessed Jason's death. It was tragic, and completely unnecessary.'

'How did you get away?' Race wanted to know. 'I mean, you obviously didn't make a complete escape, not unless you purposely got baked in the desert sun.'

'Put up your horses,' Boone ordered. 'We can catch up during supper.' He looked at Ether. 'I hope you brought plenty of supplies?'

He said they had and Ether and Boone stripped the saddles and gear from the two horses. Then they took them down to where Boone had picketed his string of horses and returned to the cave.

Callie had used Boone's comb to brush the tangles from her hair. It left the hair fuzzy, but it fell to her shoulders in a loose semblance of order. She didn't hide the fact she was self-conscious, wearing a man's outfit, but she related to Race and Ether what she knew.

Boone added a modest account of how he had acquired three extra horses and then they got down to business.

'So how many are we up against?' Race wanted to know. 'You've taken out three of them, and Miss Moray got another, so that should make a dent in the total.'

'It might also cause Muskott to hire a few extra guns. That wouldn't be hard to do in a place like Amoroca.'

'You overheard them talking about a buyer for Eric?' Ether asked Callie.

'Yes, but it sounded as if they would have to wait for several days. They were going to spend some of that time spending the money they got for Joan and I.
